I Call U F E A R….….

Tina Green
4th of March, 2022

I call you FEAR-insurmountable, all-consuming fear.
I named you ‘FEAR’ because you refused to show me your face in the light of day.
Little prickly pear points rubbing against my skin whenever I sensed your presence.
Just the thought of your arrival causes my scream to get caught up in my throat.
Have you ever heard the very first seconds of a newborns screams when the doctor sticks them with the first of many inoculations to come?
No, you don’t hear the first audible scream because the newborns soundless scream gets caught up in that first intake of breath when the needle pierces their skin.
In the exhale that follows that’s when you hear the wail of an infant in pain.
SCREAMS…+ … BREATH… + … PAIN… +… FRUSTRATION…+… ANXIETY…+ BEWILDERMENT…equals…. F E A R for me
That’s what I call you when I’m searching in the darkness for a piece of me that you stole.

Woman standing on a stage in a dark room speaking into a mic with hands gesturing as she speaks

“Hope” is the thing with feathers

Emily Dickinson

“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -

And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -

I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.
